Playstyle & Skills
Three trees define her options. Bow and Crossbow Skills covers ranged attack abilities including Strafe, Multiple Shot, and Freezing Arrow. Javelin and Spear Skills blurs the line between melee and ranged, with elemental options like Lightning Fury and Plague Javelin handling crowd situations. Passive and Magic Skills sits beneath both of the others — Critical Strike, Pierce, and Evade apply universally, so every Amazon build naturally invests here regardless of primary damage type.
The practical result is a class where the passive tree acts as a multiplier. A bow build and a javelin build look very different in terms of active skills, but both get stronger from the same passive investments.
Early Game & Leveling
Normal difficulty favours a melee-adjacent start. Jab delivers reliable single-target damage from the opening levels, and Poison Javelin handles the first groups of clustered enemies you encounter. The most important early decision is putting points into the passive tree — Critical Strike in particular pays back its cost on every build you might transition into later. By mid-Act 2, the choice between a lightning javelin path and a bow path should be made, as both require different gear preparation.
Farming & Endgame
Charged Strike is the Amazon's premier single-target tool. The chain lightning it generates on contact scales dramatically with gear and makes short work of Act bosses — Baal in particular takes exceptional damage from it at high investment levels. For area clearing, Lightning Fury and Plague Javelin cover high-density zones like the Secret Cow Level with minimal effort.
Bow builds occupy a different position: they require significantly more gear before they function at a competitive level, which means they are not a practical starting path without an existing item supply. Strafe and Multiple Shot excel once the gear threshold is met, but that threshold is higher than for the javelin side of the tree.
Damage Formulas
Understanding how the Amazon's damage scales with stats is critical to gear selection:
- Throwing & Melee weapons: Final damage = weapon damage × (Strength + 100) / 100
- Bows & Crossbows: Final damage = weapon damage × (Dexterity + 100) / 100
This means Dexterity is the primary damage attribute for bow builds, while Strength matters more for javelin and spear builds. Both stats also contribute to attack rating and defensive capabilities.
Build Archetypes
The Amazon supports several distinct build paths, each with different gear requirements and playstyles:
- Lightning Javazon — The most popular endgame build. Uses Lightning Fury for area clearing and Charged Strike for single targets. Dominates high-density areas like the Cow Level. Relatively low gear requirements to start.
- Poison Javazon — AoE damage through Plague Javelin. Effective for crowd control and works well in areas where lightning immunes are common.
- Freezing Bowazon — Uses Freezing Arrow for crowd control and area damage. The cold damage shatters corpses, preventing monster revival. Requires strong bow and mana sustain gear.
- Multishot / Strafe Bowazon — Physical bow builds relying on Multiple Shot for clearing and Strafe for sustained damage. Requires significantly more gear investment than javelin builds, including high-end bows like Windforce or Faith.
- Exploding Arrow Bowazon — Ranged AoE via Exploding Arrow's fire splash. Useful in areas with many physical immunes where other bow builds struggle.
Essential passive skills for any build include Critical Strike (doubles attack damage), Dodge, Avoid, and Evade. Pierce is critical for javelin and bow builds alike, as it allows projectiles to hit multiple targets.
