Chaos Sanctuary
The Chaos Sanctuary is widely considered the single best all-around farming zone in Diablo 2. It offers Diablo himself as a boss kill, three Seal Bosses with guaranteed drops, dense elite spawns, and massive experience per run. The static layout means you can memorize the path and run it efficiently every time.
This alvl 85 zone provides everything: experience toward level 99, elite packs that drop any item in the game, High Runes from the dense monster population, and Diablo who exclusively drops the Burning Essence of Terror needed for Token of Absolution respecs. The three Seal Bosses (Grand Vizier, Lord De Seis, Infector of Souls) each guarantee high-quality drops.
Take the River of Flame waypoint and head across the bridge to the top-right. The Chaos Sanctuary has a fixed cross-shaped layout with five seals that must be activated to spawn Diablo.
- Fire, Cold, and Lightning immunities are all present. Physical and Magic damage builds have the easiest time here.
- Activate all five seals and kill the three Seal Bosses to spawn Diablo. The seal activation order does not matter.
- Watch for Oblivion Knights casting Iron Maiden — this curse can kill melee characters instantly on physical reflect.
- Hammerdin and Fist of the Heavens Paladin are the most efficient builds for this zone due to Magic damage bypassing most immunities.
- Max Fire Resistance is critical. Under-capped characters will struggle against the heavy fire damage throughout the zone.
Hell Chaos Sanctuary is extremely punishing for unprepared characters. Cap all resistances (especially Fire) and bring sufficient damage and survivability before attempting.
Diablo drops Burning Essence of Terror. Seal Bosses and elite packs can drop any item in the game. The density of monsters makes this one of the best spots for High Rune farming at elevated player counts.
