Runeword Guide
How runewords work in Diablo 2: Resurrected. Covers creation rules, socket requirements, best runewords by level, and common mistakes to avoid.
Overview
Runewords are among the most powerful items in Diablo 2: Resurrected. By inserting specific runes in the correct order into the right type of socketed item, you create an item with powerful fixed bonuses. Runewords can rival or surpass unique and set items, making them essential for endgame builds.
Creating a runeword requires following exact rules. If any rule is broken, you just get an item with individual rune bonuses — not the runeword.
- Correct base type: The item must match the runeword's allowed types (e.g., "Body Armor" means chest armor only — not helmets or shields)
- Exact socket count: The item must have exactly the same number of sockets as runes in the runeword. A 4-socket item cannot make a 3-rune runeword.
- Correct order: Runes must be inserted left-to-right in the exact order listed.
- Gray (normal or superior) items only: The base item must be white/gray name. Magic (blue), rare (yellow), unique (gold), set (green), and crafted (orange) items will NOT work.
- Ladder vs Non-Ladder: As of D2R patch 2.4+, all runewords are available in all game modes.
These runewords use low runes and are great for leveling and early endgame:

- Wrong socket count: A 4-socket sword won't make Spirit (which needs exactly 4) if you accidentally use a 5 or 6 socket base.
- Wrong base type: "Armor" in a runeword description means body armor only, not any armor piece. "Melee weapon" does not include bows.
- Using magic/rare bases: Only plain white or gray (superior) bases work. Even if a magic item has the right number of sockets, it will not create a runeword.
- Wrong rune order: Inserting runes out of order gives you a useless socketed item. There is no way to undo this without destroying the item.
- Spirit shield: Spirit requires a 4-socket shield. Only Monarch (or Paladin shields) can roll 4 sockets among non-paladin shields. Monarch requires 156 Strength.
- Use the Runeword Creator tool to check which runewords you can make with your current runes.
- Superior bases with 15% Enhanced Defense or 15% Enhanced Damage are ideal for expensive runewords, but the repair cost is much higher.
- Ethereal bases are excellent for merc runewords since mercenaries don't lose durability.
- Check the Cheat Sheet for a quick reference of all runes and their properties.
