Playstyle & Skills
The Traps tree places autonomous sentries that deal damage without requiring you to be in range — it is the closest Diablo II gets to a summoner-style ranged build. Shadow Disciplines provides speed buffs, crowd control, and the Shadow Master companion, who operates independently and copies your gear. Martial Arts works on a charge-and-release mechanic: Charge-up Skills accumulate effects that are then detonated by a Finishing Move, rewarding builds that manage their combo state carefully.
Most Assassin builds draw from at least two trees. Trap builds still benefit from Shadow Disciplines for speed and utility, and Martial Arts builds often supplement their damage with secondary trap placements.
Early Game & Leveling
Fire Blast functions immediately at level 1 and provides consistent ranged damage before the trap skills come online. Lightning Sentry becomes available at level 12 and marks the point where the Trap Assassin's damage output separates itself from other early-game options. Players taking the melee route can combine Tiger Strike with Dragon Tail for strong physical-into-fire burst damage. The Assassin's base run speed is among the highest in the game, which makes the progression feel comfortable regardless of the path taken.
Farming & Endgame
The combination of Lightning Sentry and Death Sentry is the Assassin's most efficient farming setup and functions at a competitive level without requiring expensive gear. Death Sentry's Corpse Explosion component multiplies the effective clearing speed in dense zones significantly. Wake of Fire is an alternative for the Secret Cow Level specifically, though its fire damage creates practical problems in other zones due to common Fire Immunities.
For Über content, the Kick-based melee build using the Chaos runeword is the standard approach. Chaos provides the Barbarian's Whirlwind skill to the Assassin, opening a playstyle that handles the Pandemonium bosses effectively with mid-tier gear.
