Beginner's Guide to D2R
A complete introduction to Diablo 2: Resurrected for new players. Covers difficulty levels, resistances, stat allocation, essential tips, and what to keep.
Overview
Diablo 2: Resurrected is a deep action RPG with decades of community knowledge behind it. This guide helps brand new players understand the basics, avoid common mistakes, and start having fun right away.
D2R has eight playable classes. For beginners, these are the most forgiving:
| Class | Beginner Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sorceress | Best for beginners | Teleport for fast movement, strong elemental damage, great for Magic Find farming. Blizzard Sorceress is the easiest first build. |
| Paladin | Very beginner-friendly | Hammerdin is one of the strongest builds in the game. Holy Shield provides great survivability. |
| Necromancer | Very beginner-friendly | Summon Necromancer (Fishymancer) lets your skeletons do the fighting while you stay safe. Low gear requirements. |
| Amazon | Good | Javazon is powerful and fun. Slightly more gear-dependent than the options above. |
| Barbarian | Moderate | Tanky but slower to level. Whirlwind build is gear-dependent. |
| Druid | Moderate | Wind Druid is solid but needs specific gear to shine. Summoner Druid is easier early on. |
| Assassin | Moderate | Trapsin is strong but has a steeper learning curve for positioning. |
| Warlock | Moderate | New class added in Reign of the Warlock expansion. Versatile caster with unique Cleave and Mirrored Blades skills. |
Difficulty Levels
The game has three difficulty levels, played in order:
- Normal: Your first playthrough. Learn the game, complete all quests, and reach roughly level 30-40.
- Nightmare: Monsters are tougher, some gain immunities. Finish around level 60-70.
- Hell: The true endgame. Many monsters are immune to certain damage types. Max-level content.
Resistances
Keeping your resistances high is critical for survival:
- You lose 40 all res entering Nightmare and another 60 entering Hell (total -100 penalty in Hell)
- Aim for 75% all resistances (the cap) in Hell difficulty
- Fire and Lightning resistance are the most important — these elements deal the most spike damage
Stat Points
For most builds, stat allocation is straightforward:
- Strength: Just enough to wear your gear
- Dexterity: Just enough for gear (or for max block on shield builds)
- Vitality: Everything else goes here — more life keeps you alive
- Energy: Almost never invest here ("don't put points in Energy" is a D2 golden rule)
- Don't sell or drop runes. Even low runes are useful for runewords and cube recipes. Stash them.
- Complete every quest. Quest rewards like extra skill points, stat points, and socket quests are permanently valuable.
- Keep your mercenary alive and geared. A well-equipped Act 2 mercenary with an Insight polearm solves mana problems and adds significant damage.
- Learn runewords early. Stealth (Tal + Eth) body armor and Lore (Ort + Sol) helmet are available in Normal and will carry you far.
- Use the shared stash. D2R has a shared stash — use it to transfer items between characters.
- Identify items before selling. Unidentified items sell for less. Some items look common but are very valuable (like Shako or unique rings).
- Don't respec carelessly. You get 3 free respecs (one per difficulty from Akara quest). After that, you need a Token of Absolution.
Inventory management is a big part of D2. Here's what's worth picking up:
- Always keep: Runes (all of them), unique/set items you haven't identified, charms with useful stats, jewels, perfect gems
- Identify and check: Rare rings, amulets, gloves, boots, belts, circlets — these can roll amazing stats
- Skip: White/gray items (unless you need a runeword base), most blue (magic) items, low-level set/unique items you've already found
- Runeword bases: Keep 4-socket Monarch shields, 4-socket polearms, 4-socket flails, and other popular bases
- Common D2R Terms — learn the community vocabulary
- Runeword Guide — understand one of the game's most important systems
- Magic Find Guide — learn how to farm items efficiently
- Cheat Sheet — quick reference for breakpoints, recipes, and more
