Leveling Guide
Efficient leveling strategies for Diablo 2: Resurrected. Best areas by level range, XP mechanics, player count scaling, and tips for reaching level 99.
Overview
Leveling efficiently in Diablo 2: Resurrected means knowing which areas to farm at each stage of the game, understanding XP penalties, and maximizing your kills per hour. This guide covers the fastest leveling strategies from level 1 to 99.
- Party bonus: Each additional player in the game increases monster XP. In an 8-player game, monsters give ~4.5x more XP than solo.
- Level difference penalty: If your level is too far above or below the monsters, you receive less XP. Stay within ~10 levels of the area for full XP.
- Higher monster levels: Monsters in Hell are level 67–85+, far above Normal. The XP formula scales with monster level, so Hell monsters yield dramatically more XP.
- Terror Zones: Terrorized areas scale monster levels to your character level, making them the best XP source at high levels.
Normal Difficulty (Levels 1-40)
| Level Range | Best Area | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1-15 | Tristram runs | Clear Tristram repeatedly. Fast XP in the early levels. |
| 15-20 | Tomb runs (Act 2) | Run the False Tombs in Canyon of the Magi. Great density. |
| 20-24 | Cow Level | Excellent density and XP. Requires Baal kill to open. |
| 24-25 | Ancients quest | Complete the Ancients quest for a massive XP reward. |
| 25-40 | Baal runs | Join or create Normal Baal run games. The wave XP is exceptional. |
Nightmare Difficulty (Levels 40-70)
| Level Range | Best Area | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 40-60 | Baal runs | Nightmare Baal runs are the fastest way through this range. |
| 40+ | Ancients quest | Complete NM Ancients around level 40 for the XP reward. |
| 60-70 | Chaos Sanctuary / Baal | Alternate between CS and Baal for variety and XP. |
Hell Difficulty (Levels 70-99)
| Level Range | Best Area | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 70-80 | Baal runs | Hell Baal runs remain the gold standard for leveling. |
| 80-85 | Chaos Sanctuary / Baal | CS gives great XP and is faster to clear for some builds. |
| 85-99 | Terror Zones / Chaos / Baal / Nihlathak | Terror Zones are the best XP if the current zone suits your build. Otherwise, rotate CS and Baal runs. |
The Rite of Passage quest (Ancients) gives a huge one-time XP reward in each difficulty. To maximize it:
- Normal: Complete at level 20+ (you must be level 20 to start)
- Nightmare: Complete at level 40+
- Hell: Complete at level 60+
The XP reward scales with your level, so completing it later gives more XP, but the difference is marginal compared to just leveling efficiently.
Terror Zones rotate every hour and scale monsters to your character level. This makes them the single best source of XP at high levels (85+) where normal areas start falling off due to level difference penalties.
- Check the current Terror Zone and farm it if it suits your build
- Not all TZs are equal — open areas with high density (Chaos Sanctuary, Worldstone Keep, Cows) are the best
- Use the SP Terror Calendar to plan ahead in single player
- Use the Experience Calculator to estimate runs needed to level up
- Join public games: More players = more XP. Even if you're solo-killing, being in an 8-player game massively boosts XP.
- Don't over-clear: In Baal runs, focus on the throne waves and Baal himself. Don't waste time clearing the rest of WSK unless it's terrorized.
- Keep moving: Dead time between runs kills your XP/hour. Have your next game ready.
- Gear for speed, not MF: When leveling, kill speed is everything. Swap to MF gear only when farming.
- Use Teleport: If your class has access to Teleport (Sorceress or Enigma), use it to skip to objectives.
- Level 98 to 99: This is the biggest grind in the game. Expect hundreds of hours of Baal/CS/TZ runs. Many players consider level 98 their practical cap.
